Nothing says summer fun like playing around in the backyard on a swing set. But, practically speaking, as a military family it doesn’t make sense for us to fork out the big bucks for a large play structure. Not to mention the fact that our backyard just isn’t that big. Enter Step2 and the huge selection of affordable outdoor toys and climbers. At a realistic size and reasonable price tag, the Play Up Double Double Slide Climber is a great addition to our backyard with lots of options for play.

Slides & Climber
The Play Up Double Slide and Climber is the perfect addition to our backyard. It’s not too big to overwhelm our fairly small yard and at the same time it has plenty of opportunity for the kids to get our their energy and play. The Climber has two different levels with a longer and shorter slide. On opposite sides there are two climbing options: a ladder and a climbing wall. I really like that there are two different options – the climbing wall is more appropriate for my 3 year old while my 18 month old has already mastered the more traditional ladder way up. There’s also a steering wheel because, really, what kid doesn’t love to steer and pretend to drive?
In the following photo you can get a good look at the different levels from the side of the more traditional ladder entry with the climbing wall in the background.
Safe Backyard Fun
While I wouldn’t exactly call the assembly easy, I will tell you that a friend and I did it in about an hour or two. It requires reading the directions well (which we didn’t do well enough and had to take it apart to start over at one point – oops!) and an electric screwdriver thing (technical term). You can get a sneak peek of the assembly instructions and tools required here. Upon assembly, it’s immediately obvious that the construction is very solid and the climber is sturdy. The maximum suggested weight limit is 180 and I’ve played and climbed around with my kids on it with no problem. The weight limit is notable, too, because it helps to gauge how many children can play on it. My two kids combined weight about 55 pounds so they can easily play with several other children. There’s enough room for them to have fun doing separate things, too, with multiple slides and climbing areas.
Kids Love the Play Up Climber
I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that my kids are completely thrilled with the Double Slide Climber. They LOVE it. Though she’s a bit under the recommended 2 year age minimum, I was surprised how quickly my daughter took to the climber. She has no fear so she’s been all over and up and down and sliding. I really like that the climber isn’t too tall for her so if she does take a little tumble she really doesn’t have far to go but it’s definitely tall enough that she gets a thrill from sliding.
My 3 year old also enjoys the Double Slide Climber. He usually opts to climb up the more challenging climbing wall and prefers the longer slide. As a kid who’s still getting used to the idea of sharing I think he likes that there’s plenty of room for both he and his sister to play at the same time.
To Buy or Not to Buy
To Buy… The Play Up Double Slide Climber’s compact size is deceiving because it’s big fun. The multiple slides, climbing options, steering wheel and even hiding place underneath offers plenty of options for kids to keep busy and burn some kid energy in the process.
Or Not to Buy… Honestly, the only improvement would be more clarity in the instructions since we hit a roadblock or two getting it together. Once assembled, I really don’t have any issues with the Climber and neither do the kids.
