“This is love-a-lee!”

“Character Counts” everywhere, but at Matilda Jane Clothing it’s more than a slogan or catch phrase. “Character Counts” is the name of the Fall 2012 line of colorful, whimsical clothing for girls and women. The entire line will be introduced in three collections, the first of which is “Smile With Pride” available now. “Act With Heart” will launch August 31 and “Live With Soul” will follow October 1.

Matilda Jane Fall 2012

“Smile With Pride” is the first of the new collections to be unveiled and includes adorable tops, pants, skirts, leggings and dresses. But for me, the signature look of Matilda Jane Clothing is the knot dress and ruffles pants and this collection includes that and so much more.

As a sample, Kindergarten girl received the Esmerelda Top and Sassafras Ruffles. She didn’t even wait to finish dressing before praising them. While pulling the shirt over her head she giggled, “This is love-a-lee!” That comment made me realize how “age appropriate” the clothing is. My daughter is young, vibrant and playful. Her clothing should be as well. We’ll save the “adult-looking” clothes for when becomes an adult.

The Details

My best friend from college made a recent visit, saw the sample we received, and commented, “It looks like someone’s grandmother made these.” I could not think of a more grand compliment to include. And she’s right. Matilda Jane clothing is made with colorful, playful fabrics and tremendous care is taken with the quality of the garments. The seams on our sample pieces are immaculate and no detail is left unattended. Even the spare buttons are included with care.

While I can show you pictures of the Matilda Jane line with the bold patterns and seasonal colors, I cannot convey to you the quality of the fabric in our sample. A cotton, nylon and spandex blend, this fabric feels like a good set of soft sheets and due to the blend, will wear nicely forever. I know first hand this fabric look fabulous wash after wash. A dear friend buys Matilda Jane almost exclusively for her daughter and the pieces are wonderfully colorful long after their first wash.

The design of Matilda Jane Clothing makes sizing less stressful. Because the clothes are oftentimes loose and designed to be comfortable for active girls and women, sizing is easy. The majority of girls’ clothing is available in sizes 12 months to 12, while the women’s clothing is available in sizes S, M, & L with only a few items offered in XS and XL. Kindergarten girl will turn six in September, but is still a size 5 for most clothing options. We received the Esmerelda Top and Sassafras Ruffles, both in size 6. The Esmerelda Top fits nicely with the adjustable bow tie in back. The Sassafras pants have a loose fit and are folded over once at the top so they won’t be too long. This ensemble will last her a long time with the extra room to grow. Think your child is too small for Matilda Jane? Think again. The Sunny Side Up Diaper Cover is available in sizes 6M to 18M.

The quality of construction, longevity of fabric and ease of sizing means your Matilda Jane purchase is going to make you and your girl smile for a long time.

The Company

Matilda Jane Clothing is a “kitchen table” startup founded by Denise DeMarchis that focuses on creating a quality product for young girls and women to love. More than that, it’s a company focused on giving. Matilda Jane gives back to the community through donations to Habitat for Humanity, orphanages, and various children’s charities. With that commitment to quality and character, it’s wonderful to say that Matilda Jane is now a nationwide success.

The company also has a tremendous online presence with a thriving Facebook page, blog and website. It may seem strange then, that there is no e-commerce store through which to purchase Matilda Jane products. DeMarchis believes that by selling her product directly and exclusively through “Trunk Keepers” she can keep her business personal and provide business opportunities entrepreneurial women.

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… With women’s clothing ranging in price from $38-$82 and girl’s options ranging from $30-$56, Matilda Jane clothing is a quality wardrobe purchase that does not break the bank. Given the longevity of the style, fit and fabric, the investment in Matilda Jane is competitive with many popular children’s clothing retail stores. The primary reason to buy is the smile Matilda Jane brings to the faces of the lucky girl who gets to wear the beautiful colors and playful designs. It’s like dress-up for the outside world! I’ll be attending my first trunk show in the coming months and look forward to seeing the amazing array of “Character Counts” in person.

Or Not to Buy… Because Matilda Jane is not available in retail stores, it can be difficult to locate for purchase.

Shop! Matilda Jane is available exclusively through Trunk Keepers, representatives who get to know their customers personally. The Matilda Jane website features information on Trunk Keepers and how to host your own trunk show.
