Ergobaby Xtra Carrier Review

Ergobaby recently launched the new Xtra Carrier, an addition to the Original Carrier Collection with longer shoulder straps and an extended waistband. The Xtra Carrier is designed to provide the comfortable fit we know and love from Ergobaby to taller parents.

As a rule, we don’t leave home without an Ergobaby Carrier and we’ve been rotating between the traditional Ergo and the Xtra Carrier. We’ve talked about how much we love Ergobaby before. A lot. (Really, a lot.) So, the goal of this post is really to compare the original sized Ergo carrier to the Xtra.

Size Comparison

The Xtra Carrier shoulder straps are 6 inches longer than the traditional Original Carrier. The waistband offers a longer padded waistband and an additional 3 inch in length.

Xtra Carrier Measurements:

  • Shoulder Strap Length Range: 30”-51” (76cm-130cm)
  • Waistbelt Length Range: 34”-58” (86.4cm-147cm)

Original Carrier Measurements:

  • Shoulder Strap Length Range: 24”-44” (61cm-112cm)
  • Waistbelt Circumference Range: 26”-55” (66cm-140cm)

Fit Comparison

There’s no doubt that the Xtra Carrier will appeal to fathers, but I also really enjoy the fit. Like the traditional Ergo carrier, Xtra Carrier distributes weight between the shoulders and hips. The shoulder straps have an inch of padding and the longer waistband has a quarter of an inch padding.

The Xtra Carrier is comfortable for baby, too. Cradled in a natural sitting position, the carrier provides an ergonomic fit for baby whether riding on front, back or hip. Though Ergobaby doesn’t describe it as such, we think the body of the carrier is a bit longer and provides slightly more support up the back of our 19 month old baby. (See the photos below for fit on baby and above to compare size of support area.)

Below you’ll see side-by-side photos to compare the fit. For a bit of context, I’m 5’9″ tall.

One thing you can’t tell from the photos is that the padded area of the waistband goes nearly all the way around my waist. Anyone a bit smaller than me around the waist, may actually have difficulty achieving an appropriately snug fit.

But enough of the pictures and statistics. Here’s what you need to know: my husband does prefer the Xtra Carrier. He’s 6 feet tall and, for him, the most notable difference in increased comfort at the waistband. The extended padding makes the difference in his babywearing experience. I’m perfectly content using either carrier. For us, it could easily be the only carrier we need. But, if you plan to split babywearing time with someone much shorter or taller than you, we recommend getting the Original and the Xtra.

Shop! The Ergobaby Xtra Carrier Grey is available exclusively at Diapers.com ($119) and the Xtra Carrier Black is available only at REI for $115. By way of comparison, the Original size Carrier is also $115 – so you get extra size without the extra price.

Thank you for writing such an in depth look at both carriers and the pictures were incredibly helpful too! I’m 5’2″ so the original Ergo fits me perfectly but I wore my son till he was two and I would have liked it if that back came up higher and offered him more support for those last 3-5 months I wore him. It’s nice that the Xtra carrier has a couple extra inches for that. :-)

I like that they are thinking of the dads, especially the tall ones! My hubby is 6’4″ and I remember being thrilled when we found handles that extended on the stroller.

I have always wanted one of these carriers. You can tell the newer one is for more girth support of the child so they don’t feel like they’re falling out.

That’s awesome! I haven’t been able to talk my fiance into babywearing yet. But if he had a carrier that was designed to fit his size better he might be more apt to try it. He’s 6’4 and 300lbs…Now I just need to get my hands on one! ;)
