European Travel with Kids: 2013 in Review

By Kate |

The start of a new year is obviously a fresh start, a time to look forward in anticipation for all the new year has to offer. Of course, it’s also a good time to reflect on the previous year. For the next week or two, we’ll take a look back at 2013 on The Shopping Mama.

For my family, the past year (really, year and a half since we moved to Germany) was all about travel. We’re trying to make the most of our time in Europe and have dragged our brood by plane, train, boat and minivan all over Europe. Here’s a look back at our family travel in Europe from 2013.

A Quick Look at 2013

I used Instagram to document many of our travels. Here’s a quick 15 second wrap up of my favorite Insta-photos from our adventures last year.

That Flipgram goes a little too fast to actually take it all in, so here’s a look at a our travels in review featuring my favorite Instagram photos.

Max and I started the year with a quick weekend trip to Paris, France.

We spent our spring break in Italy, specifically Florence and Rome.

We planned to go to Cinque Terre, but Max’s accident and subsequent surgery and hospital stay in Rome meant a change in plans. Thankfully, his finger is perfectly fine now and we learned important lessons about emergency medical care in a foreign country.

Okay, so not exactly family travel, but in April I went to Madrid for a girl’s weekend for the Rock ‘n Roll Marathon / Half / 10k.

We explored Germany through many day trips, too. One of our favorite cities nearby is Heidelberg.

Because of our proximity to other countries, we can even take day trips to France. We spent Memorial Day at the Lorraine American Cemetery and Memorial in France.

Our big trip of the summer was a 7-day Greek Islands Cruise.

We spent the fourth of July at the most magical place in Europe: Disneyland Paris.

We spent about three weeks of summer break in the States visiting family, shopping at Target and I went to BlogHer in Chicago. We were back just in time for the fall fest season. We went to the Wittlich Pig Fest, Kurbisfest in Hitscherhof and the Wine Festival in Bernkastel-Keus, among others.

We took advantage of a long Columbus Day weekend we spent a few days at Legoland Deutschland.

We loved our first cruise so much that we did it again! In November we cruised to Croatia, Greece and Turkey. We spent one night before the trip in Lake Como, Italy and a night after the trip in Venice (where we got on and off our ship). While onboard, my daughter was spoiled with the Royal Caribbean Barbie Experience.

With Christmas markets in full swing, we took an overnight trip to visit the markets in Stasbourg, France and Karlsruhe, Germany.

Our final trip of the year was a last minute weekend in Prague. Even though it was after Christmas, the Christmas market was still in full swing. It was a fabulous trip to cap off our amazing year!

We’re looking forward to many more adventures, including a move to a new part of the world this summer, and I hope you’ll join us here and on Instagram.

Thank you! Traveling with young kids has its challenges, for sure, but they’re worth tackling for the experiences we are sharing and memories we are making.

So nice to see you traveling so much with your kids. We are a military family that just PCS’d to England for 3 years and one month later…..SURPRISE, pregnant with our first. We plan on taking this baby everywhere with us. He or she probably won’t remember but we’ll have the photos to prove it! Can’t wait to get lots of tips from you.

Despite the fact that little babies require a lot of stuff, I think it’s easier to travel when they’re babies and before the toddler phase. My almost 2 year old is now the most challenging.
