One of the most inspiring stories surrounding this year’s Super Bowl was Seattle Seahawks starting fullback and special teams player Derrick Coleman. Yes, he is inspiring because, like many other players on the field, he had a dream, worked hard and achieved the ultimate goal of winning a Super Bowl. But, Derrick’s story is different. He had a challenge like no one else – one that set him apart. Derrick Coleman is deaf.

Trust the Power Within with Derrick Coleman

“They told me I was a lost cause. But I’ve been deaf since I was 3 … so I didn’t listen.”

Trust the Power Within Duracell Derrick Coleman

This awesome commercial went straight up viral before it even aired during the Super Bowl. And for good reason. It tells Derrick Coleman’s story in a powerful and inspiring way. If you haven’t watched it yet, I highly encourage you to check it out.

May Hamlin Interview

As moms, we all have unique challenges but I think a bit of self-doubt is universal. After all, we  shape and grow children from before they’re even born. There are so many choices – both big and small – that have an impact on our children and who they become. It’s incredibly intimidating!

It can be particularly difficult to encourage children to “trust the power within” when we don’t always trust our own. Duracell offered me the special opportunity to ask questions of May Hamlin, Derrick Coleman’s mother, about how she encouraged Derrick to trust his power within and overcome obstacles to achieve his ultimate dream. She is, as you can imagine, truly inspiring!
