The Top Toddler Drum Sets Reviewed

Getting them started young is key to getting your child interested and skilled at drumming! This buyer’s guide is created specifically for toddlers in the 12 month – 4 year old range. Because at this age they may have minimal skills in regards to reading and coordination it is important to offer them a drum set that can accommodate these limitations.

Most of the drum sets in this category fall in line with a “toy” label and of course do not have the full features of a junior or adult drum set. But they offer enough to get your child familiar with how drumming works and will help them build the much needed skills and coordination to help them get to the next drum set level!

The Best Toddler Drum Sets

1. VTech Kidibeats Drum Set

VTech has been a leader in the toy world since my daughter was little so I know they are a quality product with longevity. This drum set is no exception!

This great first drum set offers a variety of options that will keep the engaged and playing for quite a while. Some parents who have purchased this drum set have noted their child has played with this toy for years.

The 4 different play modes really help children learn different techniques and get a better feel for different styles of music. The free play allows them to just drum their own way and make there own music. The follow along will play a beat and then the drum set will light up where your child should hit allowing them to really make music to a live beat!

VTech KidiBeats Drum Set Features:

3 drum pads

each drum has a unique LED light
2 drumsticks included

PROS

  • Volume control
  • Easy to put together
  • Fun Sound effects

CONS

  • Younger children may struggle with the programmed rhythms
  • Microphone seems to break easy
FINAL THOUGHTS: We highly recommend this drum set for kids ages 12 months – 3 years although the manufacturer gives a different suggested range. We do feel this is too small for children over 3 and they will lose interest easily. Most negative reviews we found about this product were due to issues with sounds, volume and other technical related items – so we are chalking those up to user error. A lot of what we saw could be fixed by using the proper buttons and adjustments on the toy.

2. WolVol Electric Drum Set For Toddlers

Different then the VTech drum set, the Wolvol sits more like a real drum set giving kids a more fun way to get their drumming skills on!

While the manufacturer recommended age is 3 years and up it seems many parents have purchased this drum set for kids as young as 18 months and their children have enjoyed it. The reviews on this item are awesome with only a couple of minor complaints about connections being kept or some minor loose pieces. Durable enough for even though most dedicated drummer!

WolVol Electric Toy Drum Set Features:

easy assembly
durable
microphone
3 AA batteries (not included)
8″ stool height
2 drum sticks included
recommended age: 3 years +

PROS

  • Lights for easy following of preprogrammed modes
  • Easy to put together
  • Volume adjustment

CONS

  • Some think the sound is too low
  • Very small
FINAL THOUGHTS: Another great option for children aged 18 months – 3 years although the manufacturer gives a different suggested range. Again we do not think most children over 3 will be that engaged by this toy. Most of the negatives were related to size and lack of interest in older toddlers.

3. Hape Wooden Drum Set For Toddlers

While the others in this list are battery operated – the Hape Rock and Rhythm Drum Set takes it to a whole new level with this awesome wooden drum set. In a world where kids are introduced to technology at such a young age, it is nice to see a musical item that goes old school to really allow children to enjoy the thrill of playing the drums without the batteries and distractions.

While the other options can help guide a child better because they have a “follow and play” functionality – there is something to be said for just allowing a child to “play the drums” their own way.

While overall it receives good reviews, some have reported issues with missing parts and damage to the drum heads after a few plays. Many purchased it for children younger than the recommended age as well and noted that their child loved it.

Hape Wooden Drum Set Features:

2 drum heads
cymbal
2 drumsticks
recommended age 3 years+

4. PlanToys Wooden Drum Set For Toddlers

Another wooden drum set that any toddler will love to jam on! Your child will feel like a rock star with this wood crafted drum set that offers 2 different sized drums, a cymbal and even a guiro which gives an extra level of sound your child will enjoy.

The wood of this drum set meets the social responsibility aspect by creating it from leftover sawdust and woodchips from their other toy production. They used this and applied pressure molding to create a high density fiber which is incredibly strong and durable.

The drum set is small measuring approximately 13″ x 7″ x 12″ – so it is perfect for apartments and smaller homes. Another item that has a lot of great feedback but some quality issues like an unstable cymbal which was reported by several people.

PROS

  • Durable
  • Easy to put together
  • Decent sound
  • No batteries needed

CONS

  • Cymbal is not always stable
  • Drum set is short for taller kids
  • Set is smaller than expected
FINAL THOUGHTS: Our top pick for a wooden toddler drum set because of its environmentally friendly construction. As with the above drum sets we do think children ages 12 months – 3 years will best enjoy it as older children may get bored easily. The drum set being small was the biggest complaint.

What to consider when looking for a drum set for your toddler?

If you are on the hunt for a drum set kit for your child in the age range of 1-4 years, then there are certain things you want to consider to ensure you get a drum that will last and they will enjoy.

  1. Age – many manufacturers make the recommended ages higher to protect themselves. Many of the drums on this list are recommended for ages 3+ but we do believe most children would be bored with some of these options.
  2. Ability – the drums geared for toddlers do require a little bit of dexterity since they come with drum sticks. Little hands sometimes get frustrated with trying to hold and use items like this so it is important you recognize your child’s level of ability.
  3. Size – most of the toddler drums listed here are rather small in size. If you are purchasing a drum set for a 3 year old on the larger size, they may not feel comfortable with it. On the flip side if your 5 year old is very small for their age, they may love on of these options.
